Around 1820, this United Methodist church stood closer to the Saluda River and once housed a school for area students. After Isaac Herbert, a member of the S.C. House of Representatives from 1844 to 1845, donated the land in 1833, the congregation moved to this site. The present building was constructed in 1879.
