Gateway National Recreation Area, created by Congress in 1972, spans 26,607 acres across New York City and the northern New Jersey shore, preserving beaches, bays, marshes, historic airfields, and former military sites within a major metropolitan region. Conceived in the late 1960s to protect scarce natural and cultural resources while keeping them accessible to a large urban population, it includes the Jamaica Bay, Staten Island, and Sandy Hook units. Its notable places range from Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Floyd Bennett Field to Fort Wadsworth and Sandy Hook. With more than 325 bird species and millions of annual visits, it is significant for both recreation and wildlife.
