Blackwood Covered Bridge spans the Shade River in southern Lodi Township, Athens County, Ohio, about 10 miles southeast of Athens on Blackwood Road. Built in 1881, it is a single-span King post truss bridge named for the Blackwood family, which once owned much of the surrounding township. Its vertical high-boarded siding, metal roof, projected portals, and cut-stone abutments reflect the practical design of late 19th-century covered bridges in rural Ohio. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 recognized it as a surviving example of the region’s historic bridge building.
