Mound Cemetery Mound in central Meigs County, Ohio, near Chester and the Middle Branch of the Shade River, is a preserved Native American burial mound generally attributed to the Adena, an Early Woodland people active from about 800 BCE to 100 CE. Its setting and the former presence of many nearby mounds support that origin. The mound is thought to contain the remains of a wooden burial structure for a prominent Adena individual. Unlike many local mounds damaged by digging or plowing after European American settlement, it has never been excavated and remains in fine condition, making it an important archaeological resource recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
