Members of the Lions Club of Centreville served in the armed forces of the United States of America, returned home, and served their community in the ideals of freedom and liberty for which they fought, and their contributions were remembered as helping better the town of Centreville. Prisoners of war and those missing in action were honored with the reminder that they are not forgotten and that their sacrifices helped preserve freedom. The monument also reflected support from local banks, veterans organizations, clubs, and community groups. It further honored James Olin Pippin, Jr. (1925–2011), known as Jim Pippin, a Centreville High School graduate of the class of 1942, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the American Legion, a charter member of the Lions Club of Centreville, a businessman and county proprietor in Queen Anne's County, chief executive officer, chairman of the board, and president of the Centreville National Bank of Maryland, president of the Maryland Banker's Association from 1983 to 1984, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and a man remembered for devoted service to his family, friends, community, and fellow citizens.
