The Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail is a roughly 300-mile public corridor across much of Washington, following the former Milwaukee Road from the Cascade Mountains toward Idaho. Created from a railroad decommissioned in stages after bankruptcy ended rail service in Washington, it was acquired by the state in the early 1980s and preserved under railbanking. Chic Hollenbeck and the John Wayne Pioneer Wagons and Riders Association played a major role in securing public ownership. Renamed in 2018 after years of partial use as the John Wayne and Iron Horse trails, it features the long Snoqualmie Tunnel, multiple other tunnels, historic railroad sites, and a restored Columbia River crossing at Beverly Bridge.
