Opened on May 12, 1912, before Beverly Hills was incorporated, The Beverly Hills Hotel helped turn largely open foothill land into an upscale community and became closely tied to Hollywood celebrity culture. Developed by Margaret J. Anderson and Stanley S. Anderson and designed by Elmer Grey in the Mediterranean Revival style, it gained prominence as film stars settled nearby. Its bungalows, Polo Lounge, and social scene made it a favored retreat and gathering place, while later additions such as its pink exterior and Crescent Wing strengthened its image. In 2012, it became Beverly Hills's first historic landmark, recognized as a lasting symbol of the city's prestige and entertainment-world identity.
