Cumberland Falls, known for its 125-foot wall of water dropping 60 feet into a boulder-strewn gorge, has created fond memories for millions of visitors since the late 19th century with its whispering mist and magical moonbow under the full moon. It first became a tourist resort in 1875 when a hotel was built next to the falls, and that hotel remained privately owned until 1931, when Cumberland Falls became a Kentucky State Park. The 2-story structure, best remembered as the Moonbow Inn, burned in 1949. Today, historic Dupont Lodge, built of native sandstone and hemlock beams by the Civilian Conservation Corps, overlooks the Cumberland River above the falls. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park encompasses nearly 1800 acres and offers hiking trails including one leading to Eagle Falls, water activities on the river, guided horseback rides in summer, and programs and events throughout the year that highlight the park's nature and history.
