In Korea, major fighting included the Battle of Chochiwon on July 10, 1950; the Battle of Taejon on July 19, 1950; the Battle of the Pussan Perimeter on August 4, 1950; the Pohang Breakout on September 16, 1950; the Battle of Chosin Reservoir on November 27, 1950; the Battle of Wawon on November 29, 1950; the Battle of Hoengsong on February 11, 1951; Bloody Ridge on August 18, 1951; Heartbreak Ridge on September 13, 1951; Triangle Hill on October 14, 1952; and Pork Chop Hill on July 6, 1953. The U.S. population was 151,700,000, the commanders in chief were Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, total service members numbered 5,764,100, combat deaths were 33,651, and casualties were 136,935. General Douglass MacArthur said, “The Soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.”
