The original St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church stood on this site. Built in 1844, the one and one-half story 18'×24' log structure served as a church, as a home for the founding pastor, the Rev. John Otto Bredeick, and as a school. It was destroyed in the "Black Friday" fire on May 3, 1872.
