Baltimore Harbor Light, officially Baltimore Light, stands in the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of Maryland’s Magothy River, marking the channel toward the Patapsco River and Baltimore harbor. Requested in 1890, it faced major setbacks when a storm overturned its caisson during construction in 1904 and further delays followed before completion in 1908. The last lighthouse built on the Chesapeake, it was unusually tall for a caisson lighthouse and was then the tallest of its kind in the world. In 1964 it briefly became the world’s first nuclear-powered lighthouse. Privately owned since 2006, it remains an active navigational aid operated and serviced by the U.S. Coast Guard.
