Hugh "Squire" McGlaughlin built this log cabin in Marlin's Bottom in 1850 for his family, skillfully using simple hand tools. A few years later, the home also welcomed weary travelers along the Huntersville-Warm Springs Turnpike, now Route 39. Around 1890, twenty years after Hugh's death, his son Andrew sold the family home and 600 acres to create the new town of Marlinton. Historian William T. Price described Hugh's humble beginnings as having only an axe, maul, and wedge, and the cabin, built with practical features such as V-notch corner joints, was found intact inside an old building on Tenth Avenue during demolition in 2007.
