Built in 1874, the Otway Covered Bridge is the only remaining covered bridge in Scioto County. After the State of Ohio relocated State Route 348 West, the bridge was slated for demolition, but a local group of citizens formed a preservation society in 1960, petitioned for ownership, and gained possession in 1963. The society later went dormant with the death of its members. In 1974, the Village of Otway restored the bridge, but this proved temporary, and as the structure continued to decline it became unsafe for traffic and was closed. The Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail, Inc. then began fundraising and hired a local contractor to replace the roof and side boards, but a tornado damaged the new roof in March 2012 as it tore through the village. Cooperative efforts by the Otway Historical Society, the Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail, Inc., Scioto County Commissioners, and the Scioto County Engineer secured repairs and preservation, aided by a federal grant awarded in August 2012 and matching funds raised through donations and the county engineer’s office. Rehabilitation was completed, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on August 30, 2014.
