A rail line reached Ellsworth in 1884 for Shore Line Railroad passenger trains and was soon extended to McNeil Point in Hancock, where passengers boarded a ferry for the short trip to Bar Harbor; it was later extended to Washington County for both passenger and freight service. After Maine Central took over rail service, a new Ellsworth depot was built in 1928 to replace the 1912 Victorian-style station, and freight service through Ellsworth ended in 1984. Larry Pelletier, Sr. began his bakery business in a small building in 1955, and a new building was erected on the same Main Street lot in 1968. People who grew up in Ellsworth fondly remember buying baked goods at the family-owned bakery, which closed in 2006.
