On this site in 1916, the St. John community donated land and logs to construct a Rosenwald school building for the negro children of the community. Earlier schools were established at St. John Missionary Baptist and later a small one room elementary school. In 1926, St. John was named the Claiborne Parish Training School to prepare students to teach negro children throughout the parish. The building was destroyed by fire in 1945.
