Between 1971 and 1989, the DSNH excavated approximately 60% of SunWatch village. Those excavations revealed at least 19 structures, 308 storage and trash pits, numerous thermal features, three separate sequences of stockades, several possible sweat lodges, and a central pole complex surrounded by a plaza. Public interest continued to grow, and plans for village reconstructions and an interpretive museum were pursued.
