On June 27, 1950, Lt. Charles Moran of the 58th Fighter (AW) Squadron shot down the lead plane of the first invading flight of the Korean War, and four of the enemy's nine fighter planes were destroyed. He was killed in action 40 days later on Aug. 7, 1950. Born in Horse Cave in 1924, he was the grandson of "Uncle Charlie" Moran, Centre's famous football coach, and is buried in Horse Cave Cemetery.
