Menoken Indian Village Site, east of Bismarck above Apple Creek, preserves a fortified Native village occupied roughly between 1100 and 1300, with its defensive works likely dating to about 1300. Important to the deeper prehistory of the Northern Plains, it predates sites more clearly connected to the historic Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara. Archaeologists interpret it as a semi-permanent settlement where residents hunted bison and other game while living in a defended community of about 11 to 13 semi-subterranean houses. Its notable remains include a long curving ditch with bastion loops and evidence of a palisade. Later research corrected earlier misidentification and confirmed its high archaeological value.
