Burchenal Mound is a Native American earthwork in Woodlawn in southwestern Ohio, set unusually atop an esker overlooking the West Fork of Mill Creek. Nearly circular in form, it rises about 8 feet and measures roughly 75 feet across, and soil tests indicate it was built mainly of sand. Although a test excavation took place in 1850, the unpublished results left the builders' cultural affiliation unknown. Archaeologists have suggested possible Adena or Hopewell origins based on similar mounds, which often held burials and grave goods. With little formal investigation completed, the site's greatest value is its archaeological potential, recognized by its 1975 listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
