Pvt. Richard "Dick" Moran, buried at this site, served in the 43rd Va. Cavalry and was a leading member of Mosby's Rangers, Confederate partisan Rangers who operated in Northern Virginia from early 1863 to the end of the Civil War. An early recruit and likely the oldest member when he joined Mosby's command, the tall cavalryman was an important scout and spy and was known for a loud voice likened to a foghorn. He is especially associated with the Battle of Miskel's Farm on April 1, 1863, near Broad Run and present day Route 7, when about 150 horsemen of the Union 1st Vermont Cavalry tried an early morning surprise attack on 65 Rangers camping at Thomas Miskel's farm. Moran learned of the Federal plan while visiting a nearby house and hurried back to warn the resting Rangers, after which Mosby and his men repelled the attack, inflicted heavy casualties, and captured many Union prisoners. Also buried in the Lyon Family Cemetery are members of the Burdine, Edwards, Havener, Hawes, Jackson, Lyon, Moran, Paxon, and Shryock families.
