Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek, California, began in 1955 as the Diablo Junior Museum created by Alexander Lindsay and grew into a pioneering center for both public education and animal care. It became the site of the first wildlife hospital established in the United States and launched the country’s first formal wildlife rehabilitation program in 1970. Over time it changed names, became an independent nonprofit, and moved into a purpose-built museum. Its exhibits on California wildlife and natural history connect visitors to a working hospital that treats more than 5,000 native wild animals each year and returns many to the wild.
