Industry
8
One block south, Albertus Vogt discovered hard rock phosphate in Florida in 1889, making Dunnellon a boom town and the first center of the industry. Among the most valuable mines were the Tiger Rag, Early Bird, and Eagle mines. The Marion County Phosphate Co. was the first to operate extensively. Phosphates are still mined in the area, but since 1900 the center of production has shifted elsewhere.
