The Holly Springs–Brownsville and Ohio Railroad yards stood here with a 16-car siding, water tank, and tool house, while the depot stood north across West Main Street and later became part of the Howard Bennett house. The railroad was chartered circa 1869, and Haywood County subscribed $100,000 in stock and issued bonds to cover that amount. Built north for about 14 miles to the Forked Deer River, it was a narrow-gauge 36-inch railroad. In the 1870s, the company failed, its rolling stock was removed, and the track was taken up.
