Grand Haven South Pierhead Entrance Light stands on the south pier at Grand Haven, Michigan, at the point where the Grand River enters Lake Michigan. As the outer of two lights on the pier, it marked the lakeward end of the channel and, together with its companion light, guided vessels through the river mouth into port. A light has served this site since 1839, reflecting the long importance of Grand Haven’s harbor entrance to navigation along the Lake Michigan shore. In 2009, the lighthouse was offered for sale under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. The City of Grand Haven now owns the pier, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains it.
