Near Oakville, Iowa, this site along the Iowa River preserves the successive histories of a Sauk village and the later settlement of Florence. The village was associated with Black Hawk and Keokuk, and here Sauk leaders debated whether to retake tribal lands in Illinois; Black Hawk’s followers then rallied before crossing into Illinois, leading to the Black Hawk War of 1832. After the treaty that followed, the area was identified as Keokuk’s Principal Village. Native Americans left in 1836, and Florence occupied the site until 1846 as a small river settlement with a tavern, a retail business, a ferry, and a post office.
