Wentz was founded as a market center for a 44,000-acre farm development and thrived for three years from 1914 to 1916. The townsite was named for C.C. Wentz, agent of the Two Rivers Ranch Co., who promoted it for absentee Kansas landlords and had been a well-known businessman in West Virginia before coming to Texas. By 1916 the town had grown to about 200 people, and a limousine met each train at Three Rivers to bring the mail to Wentz. A severe drouth in 1917 forced most citizens to move, the post office closed in 1921, and the two schools closed in 1948.
