Whitworth College was founded in 1858 as a Methodist womans college. It was the traditional successor to Elizabeth Academy in Washington, Mississippi. During 1861-5, it served as a Confederate hospital. It was founded by Milton J. Whitworth, a pioneer planter and lay minister.
