Installed in 1905 by the United States Geological Survey, this cableway measured the river's flow. Today, instruments sense and record the elevation of the water surface, and this information is relayed by satellite into computers of water management agencies to tell them how much water will arrive in Bend eight hours later. It is an important link in the domestic and irrigation water systems of Central Oregon.
