Bens Peak is an 8,567-foot mountain in central Nevada’s Shoshone Range, part of the Great Basin Ranges, on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Its name has been officially recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The mountain stands just north of Mount Lewis and south-southeast of Battle Mountain, and runoff from its slopes drains into the Humboldt River basin, connecting it to a major northern Nevada watershed. Though not one of Nevada’s highest summits, it rises steeply above nearby Lewis Canyon. It also lies in the Great Basin Desert, where elevation moderates summer heat but brings cold winters and sharp nighttime temperature drops.
