Tinkertown Museum in Sandia Park, New Mexico, grew from Ross Ward’s life as a self-taught artist and wood carver into one of the state’s most distinctive environments of self-taught art. Best known for Ward’s hand-carved miniature Old West town and circus, it opened in 1983 after he began building it in 1981, using more than 50,000 glass bottles set in concrete. Its collections also include wedding cake toppers, curiosities, coin-operated machines, a penny- and bottle-cap-covered Jeep Cherokee, and Theodora R, an antique sailboat that circumnavigated the world. By 2020, it had drawn more than 700,000 visitors.
