Sandia Peak Ski Area, in the Sandia Mountains northeast of Albuquerque, began in 1936 as La Madera Ski Area, New Mexico’s first ski area. Developed by the Albuquerque Ski Club under Robert Nordhaus, it grew from early rope tows and a Civilian Conservation Corps-built lodge to host the state’s first downhill ski race in 1939. After World War II, a major upgrade added what was then the nation’s longest T-bar, and easier road access in 1960 helped shape its modern identity. The Sandia Peak Tramway opened in 1966 and remained the world’s longest until 2010. Today the resort also serves year-round recreation and remained active under new ownership in 2024.
