First called Manzanita Grove, this area was once dense brush that provided rustlers a hideout and corral. It was a burial site by 1855 with public support through the Manzanita Grove Cemetery Association. The site of Manzanita School from 1857 to 1899, it included land for the school and cemetery deeded in 1862 to Coon Creek School District by P. Dippel. The Sparks family plot marks the schoolhouse site. In 1925, Manzanita Cemetery joined Lincoln and Sheridan Cemeteries to form Placer County Cemetery District #1, and it became the final resting place for many Placer pioneers.
