Camp Washington-Carver was named for Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) and George Washington Carver (1864-1943). Charles and Kathryn Midelburg deeded the land for the sum of $5.00. It was constructed from 1939-1942 by local WPA labor with materials found on site, including stone and native chestnut. West Virginia State College operated it as a Negro 4-H Camp from 1942-1957. In 1979, the Legislature transferred it to the Department of Culture and History.
