Magnolia Manor is a Victorian-era red-brick house in Cairo, Illinois, built in 1869 for businessman Charles A. Galigher soon after the Civil War. Its 14-room design used double walls with ten-inch air spaces to suit the city’s damp river conditions. The house retains many original 19th-century furnishings, preserving the feel of a period home as well as its architecture. Its history also connects to Ulysses S. Grant, who became Galigher’s friend while in command at Cairo and was later honored there after leaving the presidency. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1969, it remains one of Cairo’s notable historic buildings.
