Daniel Boone became legendary during his lifetime for leading American settlers to Kentucky and for both fighting and befriending American Indians. An accomplished hunter and woodsman, conspicuously brave yet soft-spoken, he lived a rich and remarkable life as he moved from east to west, and he came to symbolize the nation’s westward growth and the common man as a great American. Boone and his family came to Missouri in 1799 and settled around Femme Osage Creek near today’s Matson, and his name endures in central Missouri through the Boonslick region, Boonville, and Boone County. In fact, his sons Nathan and Daniel Morgan brought the Boone name to the region through their salt-making operation at Boone’s Lick, begun in 1805, a year before the Lewis and Clark Expedition returned to St. Louis; that business is now preserved as Boone’s Lick State Historic Site ten miles northwest of Boonville. Boone apparently did not meet the Lewis and Clark Expedition during its stop at Boone Settlement on May 23, 1804, perhaps because he was away on a trip, though the journals do not mention his absence. In Missouri he spent his time much as a semi-retired frontiersman might, hunting, trapping, exploring, surviving close scrapes with death, and meeting Indians, while his image as both Indian fighter and friend reflected changing national attitudes toward American Indians. Boone died in 1820 at age 85 in his son Nathan’s home, seven years after his wife Rebecca died; they were first buried in a cemetery between Dutzow and Marthasville and reburied in Kentucky’s capital, Frankfurt, in 1845. Since John Filson’s 1784 Boone autobiography, his legend has continued to grow through the Boy Scouts of America, which treated him as a founding role model in 1910, and through books, paintings, poems, movies, and a 1960s television series, whether historically accurate or not.
