Built in 1874 for Thomas J. and Mattie Cornelia Bagby McKain, the first couple married in Wills Point, this house was associated with a family whose lives reflected the town's early development. McKain had come to Texas in 1870 from Florida, while his wife, born in Virginia, was educated at Old Trinity University in Tehuacana. A merchant and Texas immigration promoter, Thomas J. McKain (1849-1922) served as the first mayor of Wills Point and later served again, and he was also an alderman and school trustee. Lumber for the house was brought by ox-wagon from Longview.
