Here, General George Rogers Clark and his Kentucky soldiers defeated and drove the Shawnee Indians from this region on August 8, 1780, aiding in making the Northwest Territory part of the United States. Tecumseh, the great Indian chief, was born here in the Shawnee village of Piqua about 1768.
