In the middle 1960s, the old Ray Building housed the Hire and Jent department store. Hazel Bray came to Monterey in 1952 after getting out of the army to manage Hire and Jent in the Ray Building. The 5 and 10 cent store operated there until 1966, when the Ray family built the round bank building. Hire, Jent and Bray then moved one block east and sold everything from toys and housewares to suits, dresses, and bikes until it closed in 1990.
