John Walters came to Phillips' Fort about 1784. Governor Isaac Shelby commissioned him lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of Kentucky Militia in 1792. He took part in local skirmishes, served under Col. Patrick Brown in 1792, and served in the War of 1812. Born in Pennsylvania in 1770, he died at his home two and a half miles south in April 1852 and was buried at South Fork Church Cemetery one-half mile west. South Fork Baptist Church began about 1782 when Rev. Benjamin Lynn baptized seven persons in Nolin Creek, and he and Rev. James Skaggs founded the church. Organized as a Separate Baptist Church with 13 members, it met at Phillips' Fort and later moved to the South Fork of Nolin. In the past, the church assumed the philosophy of United, Separate, and Regular, and it later split on the slavery issue.
