Reverends J.C. Barr and W.H. Leith, evangelists of Jefferson Presbytery, Synod of Texas, and 26 charter members established this church on January 29, 1915. The first meeting took place in the home of John R. and Charles W. Gheens, with construction of the church beginning later that year. Before opening, the church was destroyed by the hurricane of September 29, 1915, and had to be rebuilt. The first services were held in French, the predominant language of the congregation, and also in English. The congregation also conducted a Sunday school.
