Das Haus und Der Stahl
History
2
Das Haus und Der Stahl in Niagara Falls preserves the architecture, artifacts, and cultural legacy of early German Lutheran settlers from Prussia who established communities near Buffalo and Niagara Falls in 1843 and 1844 after traveling by sea to New York City and inland by the Erie Canal. Its buildings include Das Haus, originally built of logs, and the Einhaus, a rare surviving combined house and barn where people and livestock shared one roof. The site also reflects Prussian fachwerk construction, the work of potter Charles August Mehwaldt, and the continuing Low German traditions maintained by descendants in Western New York.
