Safety Harbor School began in 1907 as a two room frame building behind the present day fire station, serving grades one through eight. In 1916, a new red brick three story school house was built at its current location. By 1926, growing enrollment led to expansion with larger classrooms and a 500 seat auditorium equipped with state of the art flood lights on the stage. By 1936, the school had expanded to include grades one through nine and added more buildings. In 1942, the playground was plowed for a Victory Garden, and students grew food used in the cafeteria for school lunches, while fire and bomb drills became routine. After WWII, enrollment steadily increased, and the first kindergarten class was added in 1948. In 1961, a six million dollar bond issue funded the demolition of the original 1916 building, remodeling of the 1926 additions, and construction of a 14 classroom wing. In 1962, the school became an elementary school when grades seven through nine moved to the middle school. In the mid-60s, Lincoln Heights School closed and African-American students were integrated into Safety Harbor Elementary School. In 1968, a single unit kindergarten pod was added, and in 1984 a three room pod followed because of a sharp rise in kindergarten enrollment. Over the years, Safety Harbor Elementary School and the City of Safety Harbor developed a strong working relationship, and the school auditorium continues to serve many programs and functions.
