The area is rich in prehistoric evidence and was home to the buffalo and Plains Indians. Explored by the early Spanish, it was settled when the Rock Island Railroad was built through in 1901. A brick building constructed in 1921 became home to a fine school, and an adobe gym was built in 1935 by WPA laborers. The buildings are listed on the National and State Historic Registers, and now as a Community Center the site is the heart of community activity.
