The Cemetery Outhouse is a typical building from the turn of the century, around 1900. Because it served a more or less public use, it was divided into two sections, with one entrance for women and the other for men. In Freistadt, as in other church-centered communities, Sunday was set aside for the Lord, and especially in warm weather families spent time tending the graves of relatives. In the horse-and-buggy days, families brought lunch and ate their noon meal on the cemetery grounds before hitching up the horses for the drive home. Because the cemetery was a wide open, fairly level area, it also became the site of church picnics and mission festivals where parishioners socialized with friends, relatives, and neighbors. With so much time spent on the cemetery grounds before indoor plumbing, a clean outhouse was an essential convenience. It was later moved from Trinity's cemetery to its present location in the late 1960's.
