Henry A. Hamp spent 30 years with the Department from 1951 to 1981, including the last 19 years as chief of right-of-way acquisition for state highways, when he supervised the acquisition of some 43,000 land parcels and 11,000 billboards involving approximately $465 million in expenditures. Earlier in his career, he served as assistant chief of acquisition and as chief right-of-way buyer or appraiser in several Department districts in the Lower Peninsula. Alfred R. Vogel spent much of his 33-year highway career from 1936 to 1969 as the forester for the Department's 11-county Saginaw District in east-central Michigan, specializing in roadside maintenance development and landscaping.
