Katy Trail State Park, stretching 225 miles from St. Charles to Clinton, is one of Missouri's premier attractions and the nation's longest developed rails-to-trail project. After the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad discontinued rail operations from Sedalia to Machens in 1986, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources had an opportunity under the National Trails System Act to convert the rail corridors into a trail. Edward D. "Ted" Jones spoke in favor of the project across the state and lobbied the Missouri legislature for approval, and he and Pat Jones donated $2.2 million to acquire the corridor and develop the trail. After Ted's death in 1990, Pat Jones and the Edward Jones Co. continued supporting the park, contributing to reconstruction after the flood of 1993 and funding full-color trail brochures. Pat Jones also backed trail and greenway efforts across Missouri through groups including the Missouri Parks Association, Missouri Prairie Foundation, Missouri Rails-to-Trails Foundation, and the Citizens Committee for Soil, Water and State Parks, which organized the campaign to place the parks-and-soils sales tax renewal on the ballot, where it won approval from more than two-thirds of Missouri voters. In 2002, their contributions were recognized when the Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones-Confluence Point State Park, at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, was named in their honor as part of a regional effort to link trail access from the Katy Trail to Illinois.
