Heyburn State Park in northern Idaho spans connected lakes, marshes, hills, and forests and is the oldest state or provincial park in the Pacific Northwest, founded in 1908. Long before its creation, this was part of the Coeur d'Alene homeland, rich in fish, waterfowl, and game, but the park was formed from land and water taken after their territory had already been greatly reduced in the 19th century. Its present character was shaped during the Great Depression, when the Civilian Conservation Corps built many roads, trails, shelters, campgrounds, and other facilities still used today. The park remains a year-round recreation destination.
