Hancock stands at the meeting of the East and West branches of the Delaware at the base of Point Mountain, giving it the name "Gateway to the Upper Delaware" and linking it to its earlier name, Chehocton, or "Wedding of the Waters." The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway and the federally designated Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River begin there, and New York State Route 97 follows the Upper Delaware River through western Delaware, Sullivan, and Orange Counties to Port Jervis about 70 miles downstream. Since the Erie Railroad passenger train first came through in 1851, Hancock has been noted for its hotels and restaurants, a reputation that grew when Route 17 passed through the village and continued as the Scenic Byway and Pennsylvania Route 191 began there. The Upper Delaware, including the Beaverkill and the West Branch, has been consistently rated among America's finest fly-fishing locations, and Hancock has also been known for strong deer hunting as well as year-round hiking, leaf-peeping, and golf.
