The earliest marked grave in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery is that of John W. Orenbaum, who lived from 1852 to 1854, though local tradition holds that the graveyard may also contain earlier unmarked burials. Many area pioneers, veterans of the Texas Revolution, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, and victims of an early influenza epidemic are interred there. Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church was organized in 1855, and a hewn-log building called the Board Shanty was erected next to the cemetery before being moved in 1892.
