Maxwell Providence Mission Church was organized in 1889 at the District 25 schoolhouse in Maxwell Township. In 1890, its first church was built across the road and one-quarter mile north of this site. In 1904, the congregation purchased a Methodist church building in Oshkosh Township and moved it to this site. A new church with a furnace and gas lighting was built in 1913, but it burned down in 1923. The church was rebuilt on the same foundation in 1924, and in 2003 a new church was built 1.5 miles north of this site. The sign was placed in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Axel R. Anderson in 1957 and restored by the family of Lowell and Melvern Anderson Miller.
